Two titles to know, one being particularly timely this week, are Blizzard by John Rocco and Sam and Dave Dig a Hole by the brilliant duo Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen (who also created Extra Yarn, another favorite). In Blizzard, a New England neighborhood is snowed in and a young boy (based on the author’s real experiences as a boy in the blizzard of 1978) uses tennis rackets as snow shoes and fetches supplies from the grocery for everyone. A great story for problem-solving, kindness, and weather discussions. If you’ve seen I Want My Hat Back or This is Not My Hat by Jon Klassen, you already know his illustrations are subtly hilarious and require observant thoughtful audiences. Sam and Dave do indeed dig a hole to find something spectacular. Readers see what the diggers miss, but eventually the boys are satisfied with their ultimate, unexpected, discovery.
The annual Picture Book event is set for Saturday, February 21 at Wright State University. I have found this day to be invaluable throughout my library career and the teachers who attend always find new and exciting books to use with students. Info about last year's event at the Wright State ERC site. Check your email for registration information.
